Samurai Shakespeare “R and J” – New York Premiere

Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet infused with Japanese Samurai culture to premiere in New York City.

Samurai Shakespeare “R and J” is a retelling of “Romeo and Juliet.” Set in Japanese Samurai period, this version opens with the last scene of the original “Romeo and Juliet” where the parents of the young couple find their bodies, hand in hand. The investigation by Prince Escalus, the agony of Friar Laurence, and the romance of Romeo and Juliet that came to an end too quickly and unexpectedly; the story unfolds in a style of suspense drama. Using flashbacks to the various incidents and juxtaposing different moments of the play, it clarifies the cause and effect of the entire play and heightens the poetry and drama. All the characters are converted into Japanese samurai characters, emphasizing unique Japanese sentiments and philosophy surrounding the sword culture. Interlaced with thrilling Japanese sword-fighting, contemporary Japanese music, and powerful sword dance by the ensemble to express the war between two houses, Samurai Shakespeare “R and J” is a visually stimulating entertainment inspired by a classic story.
