Tokyo-born, New York-based jazz singer and composer Akemi Yamada has developed her original style of Dreamy Jazz, creating a musical world where contemporary jazz meets deep feeling, enriched by pop, Brazilian, classical, gospel, and Japanese influences. With her warm, intimate, and soothing voice, she brings this music to life in a deeply personal way.

A graduate of the BFA program in Jazz Vocal Performance at The City College of New York, Akemi studied with Sheila Jordan, Mike Holober, Ray Santos, Ray Gallon, and John Patitucci while becoming immersed in New York’s dynamic jazz scene. There, she earned recognition as a musician’s singer, known for her distinctive scat singing, original arrangements, and deeply personal approach to both standards and her own compositions.

Her first solo album, With a Song in My Heart, was recorded in 2007 with Quincy Davis, Tal Ronen, and Chuck Stevens. She later expanded her artistic voice through Ta Bi Ji – My Journey (2015), a recording that reflects the Dreamy Jazz aesthetic through original compositions and her own arrangements of jazz standards.

Akemi’s performances have been presented at respected venues including Jazz at Kitano, Drom, The Triad, Nuyorican Poets Café, Tomi Jazz, Shrine World Music Venue, The Red Pavilion, Columbia University, Liberty House, and Grace Congregational Church. She has shared stages with top NYC jazz musicians including Helio Alves, Randy Napoleon, Quincy Davis, Noriko Ueda, Boris Kozlov, Pete McCann, Toru Dodo, and Rogerio Boccato. Her work has also reached radio audiences in New York, Arizona, and Philadelphia.

Since 2009, Akemi has toured Japan annually, performing at major jazz clubs in Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka, Takamatsu, Tottori, and Sapporo. In 2019, she expanded her international presence with a performance in Taiwan at Marsalis Home Taipei.
