[Biography]
Mika Mimura was born in Osaka, Japan where she began playing marimba at 6 years old. She began her studies in classical music at Osaka College of Music, finishing her Master’s degree. Later, inspired by legendary Japanese pianist Makoto Ozone, Ms. Mimura decided to study jazz vibraphone at Berklee College of Music. During her tenure at this prestigious Boston institution, Mika built her resume performing with Phil Wilson’s Rainbow Big Band and Rainbow All Stars, and Ricardo Monzon’s Guatemala Marimba, The BandA ecLectics, led by Thelonious Monk Institute Composition winner, Petros Sakelliou. Saxophone player great Greg Osby and scores of others. After finishing Berklee Mika moved to New York, where she has been steady at work composing music and teaching while performing her music in and around NY in addition to touring Europe, North America, South and Central America with the critically acclaimed Banda Magda, led by singer/multi-instrumentalist, composer and arranger Magda Giannikou. In the midst of this busy schedule Ms. Mimura recorded her debut album, “Precious”, in 2009. In 2014, Mika’s sophomore album, “Dreamii” was released. “Dreamii” was co-produced by Mimura along with Grammy Award-winning leader of Snarky Puppy, Michael League and Magda Giannikou. This fantastic album is the artistic culmination of her life experiences since moving to the US.
