Tokyo Retro Brings the Golden Era of Japanese Music and Shōwa-Era Nostalgia to Brooklyn

BROOKLYN, NY — The Red Pavilion will transport audiences into the vibrant soundscape of Japan’s Shōwa era with “TOKYO RETRO: A Journey Through City Pop and Shōwa Classics,” taking place on Thursday, May 28, 2026, from 8:45 PM to 10:30 PM EDT.

Blending nostalgia, elegance, and musical storytelling, Tokyo Retro invites audiences on an immersive journey through some of Japan’s most iconic songs spanning City Pop, jazz fusion, kayōkyoku, and classic Shōwa-era ballads. The evening celebrates the enduring artistry and emotional depth of Japanese popular music while recreating the atmosphere of Tokyo’s retro nightlife culture.
Hosted at The Red Pavilion in Brooklyn, the event reflects the growing global fascination with vintage Japanese music and aesthetics — from vinyl collectors and jazz enthusiasts to a new generation discovering the richness of Japan’s musical heritage.

[Artist]
Violinist and composer Alyssa Chetrick traverses the musical scenes of New York and Tokyo,
merging a dual jazz and classical background. Chetrick has led and performed in ensembles at
venues such as Blue Note Place, Smalls Jazz Club, Lincoln Center, the Tokyo Metropolitan
Theatre, Jazz Gallery, The Schwarzman Center, 54 Below, and Nublu. She made her debut in
Japan at 19 as an ensemble cast member in Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812.

Chetrick went on to complete her BM in Jazz at The New School, where she studied with Sara
Caswell, Tomoko Omura, and Alex Hargreaves. She recently completed an MPH at Yale
University, where she held a chair in the Yale Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Wayne
Escoffery.

As a composer, Chetrick has written for film projects associated with Sundance and the New
Haven Inaugural Composer’s Spotlight. Her debut album, What Blooms in the Dark, reflects on
the environmental consequences of “business as usual” and has been featured on J-Wave Radio
and WFUV . She is currently on faculty at the New York Jazz Workshop. In 2025, Chetrick
completed a North American tour with Cirque du Soleil, Cirque Dreams.
